Abstract

Generative AI has rapidly penetrated creative industries -- visual art, graphic design, music composition, copywriting, video production, and game design -- fundamentally altering creative workflows, economic models, and the relationship between human creativity and machine capability. This study presents a mixed-methods evaluation combining quantitative benchmarking of six generative AI tools across five creative domains with qualitative analysis of 148 creative professionals' experiences integrating AI into their practice. The six tools evaluated were: Stable Diffusion XL (image generation), Midjourney v5 (image generation), GPT-4 (copywriting and ideation), MusicLM (music generation), Runway Gen-2 (video generation), and GitHub Copilot (code for interactive media). Quantitative evaluation used human expert panels (n = 36 professionals) rating AI-generated and human-created outputs on quality, originality, and fitness-for-purpose across 600 paired comparisons. Qualitative data came from semi-structured interviews and workflow logs of 148 professionals across advertising, publishing, game development, architecture, and music production. AI-generated images were rated indistinguishable from professional work in 38.4 +- 4.2% of paired comparisons for commercial illustration, but only 12.6 +- 3.8% for fine art -- confirming that AI excels at stylistic consistency but lags on conceptual depth. AI-assisted workflows reduced creative production time by 42.8 +- 8.4% on average but professionals reported that the time saved was partially reinvested in iteration and refinement, reducing net time savings to 28.4%. The most common integration pattern (68.2% of professionals) was AI for initial ideation and rough drafts with human refinement for final output -- a collaborative model rather than replacement. Economic analysis estimated that generative AI reduced per-project costs by 34.2% for commercial content but simultaneously reduced demand for entry-level creative positions by an estimated 18-24% in surveyed firms. A practical integration framework mapping creative task type, quality requirements, and workforce implications to recommended AI adoption strategies is proposed.
